Athletic Training is a very interactive and hands on major. Every high school, college, and professional sports team has an Athletic trainer. Their main job is to help prevent and diagnose injuries that occur from sports. Here at Salem State there is an CAATE accredited Athletic Training Department. CAATE is the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education. The department works very hard to make sure the students succeed and go on to successful careers. Most students pick this major because of an interest in human sciences or even having a past experience with Athletic trainer. I asked the director of Athletic Training Dr. Gallo, how he became interested in the career. He told me that early on he had worked with Athletic Trainers and Physical therapists. From that experience he then knew that he was interested in human sciences and rehabilitation of sport injuries. Also students seem to like the athletic culture of the major, as it mainly interacts with sports. One major problem that seems to occur is that students who pick Athletic training, do not always know exactly what it is. A good amount of students that are interested in the sport and movement department pick Athletic Training. They think it is the same thing and when they start taking the classes they realize its not what they wanted and switch out.

There are two phases to the Athletic Training major. There is the pre-professional and professional phase. In order for students to get into the professional phase they need to do well in their freshman year classes. When students get to their sophomore year they will then apply for the professional phase. Students need to send in their grades and provide letters of recommendations to the director of the department. Once the students get into the program they will then continue with their classes and start their clinical hours.

Athletic Training is a very dedicated major. Along with a grueling schedule of science classes, there are clinical hours that need to be done each semester. In order to obtain a degree, each student needs to complete eight hundred and fifty hours of
clinical. Students are responsible for being committed to show up and give one hundred percent. Also students should follow the Athletic Training code of ethics. This pretty much states how they should conduct themselves and interact with others. In order for students to achieve the most success they need to make sure that they take certain actions. They need to be proactive with their academics and stay ahead. Also it helps if they work well with their clinical instructors, so they can learn as much as possible. There are also challenges that students tend to face. Most of the problems revolve around students not managing their time wisely. It gets tough to mange your time with all the classes and clinical hours. Also if you are working or playing a sport in college. If students can manege their time wisely, they will be much more prepared and will perform better.

The professor and directors of the Athletic training department care a lot about the students. At the end of four years there is a test that the students need to pass to become a certified Athletic Trainer. The professors push the students in the classroom

to make sure that they are prepared for this test. The professors have fun working with the students and love to see them progress through the major. They really find it rewarding to see their students pass the test and go on to their careers.

Academic writing plays a big role in the studies of Athletic Training. In the required classes there tends to be a lot of research papers and projects that involve writing. This type of writing helps reinforce certain topics for the students. Students view the writing assignments as an opportunity to learn new materials. Also writing can be used as communication and to get in touch with coaches or athletic directors. In one of the academic journals about rehabilitation that I looked at, there tends to be a lot of stats and percentages. They use the stats to see what is effective and what is not. The author uses these numbers to come to conclusions about the subject. Also the author establishes credibility by adding tables with different components in it. A
