Rhetorical Modes Matrix

Rhetorical modes are methods for effectively communicating through language and writing. Complete the following chart to identify the purpose and structure of the various rhetorical modes used in academic writing. Provide at least two tips for writing each type of rhetorical device.

NOTE: You may not copy and paste anything directly from the textbook or a web site. All information included in this assignment must be written in your own words.

Rhetorical Mode
Purpose ? Explain when or why each rhetorical mode is used. Structure ? Identify the organizational method that works best with each rhetorical mode. Tips ? Provide two tips for writing in each rhetorical mode.
Narration The purpose of Narration is to tell a story or explain and event. Telling the story from start, middle to finish.

1) Define who your audience will be.

The purpose of Illustration is to use detailed examples to make general ideas concrete and specific. Ideas followed by main point in order of importance.

1) Deside if you will be writing fictional or fact.
2) Make a plot.
Description The purpose of Description is to provide images to evoke and share a feeling. Using all five senses. Sight, smell, touch, taste, and hear. Tone set of a person, place, or thing using senses and use of arrangement based on appearance

1) Use consice details.
2) Incorporate the five senses.
Classification The purpose of Classification is to group entities into categories based on similarities. Introduction paragraph followed by dividing into subgroups followed by the reason why.

1) use strong details for each subtopic.
2) Break down the original topic in to three or for subtopics.
analysis The purpose of Process analysis is to provide the audience with direction or how a procedure works. Introduces the process and steps of the order in which they occur.

Definition The purpose of Definition is so the reader understands exactly what you are talking about. Stating definition of term while explaining rationale of the definition.

Compare and
contrast The purpose of Compare and contrast give the author the opportunity to compare two different items similarities and differences. Two subjects compared and the reason why Providing useful knowledge to audience.
Cause and
effect The purpose of Cause and effect is when tracing the causes of a particular event or situation. General introduction of an event that leads to main cause and main effect or various cause and effects.
Persuasion The purpose of Persuasion is to change readers\' attitudes or actions with regard to specific subjects.

Write a 100- to 150-word paragraph explanation that demonstrates why compare and contrast is the appropriate rhetorical mode for the topic you chose in Week Two.
