After soccer, boxing is the second most participated, as well as viewed, sport in Mexico. According to Wikipedia, boxing is a is a martial art and combat sport in which two people engage in a contest of strength, and test their reflexes, and endurance by throwing punches with gloved hands. The sport of boxing is said to have begun back when the ancient Greeks used it as a sport in the Olympic game as early as 688 BC. Also, ESPN has ranked boxing as the hardest sport in the entire world. Since boxing involves forceful, repetitive punching, precautions must be taken to prevent damage to bones in the hand.
Most trainers do not allow boxers to train and spar without wrist wraps and boxing gloves. Hand wraps are used to secure the bones in the hand, and the gloves are used to protect the hands from blunt injury, allowing boxers to throw punches with more force than if they did not utilize them. Gloves have been required in competition since the late nineteenth century, though modern boxing gloves are much heavier than those worn by early twentieth-century fighters
There are a total of twelve 3-minute rounds and like any other sport, boxing has it?s rule. Although there are a lot, they?re fairly simple. No hitting below the belt. No pushing one?s opponent, nor hitting with one?s head, shoulder, forearms, or elbow. No holding the opponent while hitting him at the same time. It is illegal to ?hit on break? which means that when the referee breaks the two boxers from a clinch, they must both take a full step back before hitting the opponent. Players lose by knockout if they?re on the floor for ten seconds or more.
Recently, the boxing match that has made international news has been the fourth fight between Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny ?Pac-Man? Pacquiao. Even Mitt Romney and his wife, Ann, had ringside seats to that fight. At the beginning, Pacquiao seemed to be quicker when it came to punches. He seemed to know that he was there for the win, and was willing to do whatever was needed. When asked in an interview before the big fight, Juan Manuel Marquez told reporters that he had started training as soon as he ?lost? the third fight. It was apparent by the third round the Mexican boxer had been working hard, because he knocked down Pac-Man ? something that nobody had ever been able to do. In the sixth round, just two seconds before it was over, Marquez did the impossible! He threw an incredible punch and that was it! Manny Pacquiao was knocked out! Marquez fans everywhere cheered on the underestimated boxer. Although it is rumored that Pacquiao wants a fifth match, or rematch, to show that he can knockout Marquez, fans everywhere disagree with it; Marquez won this rivalry fair and square.
