A common misconception of a materialistic person is the typical, haughty, upper class citizen, complaining about the curtains in their new beach-front mansion. Although this may be true, almost every working-class American has been exposed to the effects of materialism. Whether it be the urge to buy the latest iPhone, a car, or even a brand of clothing, all Americans have a bit of a selfish side. But, does money really buy happiness? How can one truly be happy with themselves after a day full of spending money, yet, not care to check the news? With that being said, it is evident that not enough people care about society and problems that come along with it. Instead, they care about more tangible items. Although many may not realize it, it is crucial for Americans to educate themselves on current events; it is important to know how current events directly affect us, how it makes forming personal choices and opinions much easier, and how it allows Americans to be more socially involved.
Whether it be topics affecting us locally, nationally, or internationally, it is vital to keep up with such knowledge . It is important to stay up to date with local crime and poverty, to be aware of what is going on in your area. It is important to stay up to date with the 2016 presidential election, to be aware of the direction that our country is heading. It is important to stay up to date with the revolts in other countries, to be aware as to why our gas prices are rising. All of these major topics are being drowned out by fancy gadgets, sports cars, and makeup lines. Once the importance of these topics begins to be realized, it will become customary for Americans to care more about current events then materialistic items.
Far too many people struggle to keep up with current events these days, even though the technology that we have makes news very accessible. Technology is being used for other, unnecessary things. Staying focused on the current happenings of the United States makes forming personal opinions and choices much easier, such as choosing a political party. Especially this election year, it is very important to know where one stands politically. Many accusations are being thrown around about either candidate, making it difficult for people who rarely follow the news to know what to believe or not. When we turn our focus to less important things, we are losing touch with things that can truly affect our lives in the future
Being aware with what is going on in the community, allows one to be more socially involved. Being more socially involved does not mean putting more money into the community with all the useless products we buy, but being able to hold a conversation discussing important topics amongst one another. Having this skill can be critical during conversations at school, work, interviews, etc. These knowledgeable conversations should incorporate topics surrounding problems in society, and how we should begin to go about fixing such problems. Americans need to become more comfortable talking about some, not-so comfortable topics and situations.
Most Americans can be found guilty of being materialistic, whether they mean to or not. It is evident that not many people follow the news, or care to know what is going on in their society. Instead, they care about more the finer, more expensive things in life. It is critical for Americans to begin putting more thought and care into topics that can have an effect on everyone's lives; it is important to know how current events directly affect us, how it makes forming personal choices and opinions much easier, and how it allows Americans to be more socially involved.
