Francesca Gabriel A.P. Language and Composition Prompt 2-7-17   Consumerism is critical to the global market. Because of this relationship, it is important for consumers to realize how involved they are with purchasing on a regular basis. The first "Buy Nothing Day" was put into effect in Canada in 1992; the government, urged citizens to spend 24 hours without purchasing any goods. This 24 hour period was  intended to function as a "detox" from consumption, to expose buyers to the environmental and ethical consequences of overproduction. With this example in place, consumers were able to recognize just how reliant they were on shopping. The establishment of annual "Buy Nothing Days" would benefit the average consumer by helping them to reevaluate the means of their spending, become more appreciative of their materials, and contribute to many other subtle world improvements. With the constant convenience of easy access to in-store and online products it is easy for shoppers to lose sight of how much they are really spending, as well as loose the ability to differentiate between wants and needs.  If buyers have the means to splurge on unnecessary items, they often will. Consumers can often tend to lose their senses of moderation. The establishment of "Buy Nothing Days"  as a theoretical holiday in the United States will open consumers' eyes to their ability or inability to purchase in moderation. It will also expose them to the concept of wants vs.needs. While a buyer may be inconvenienced, or simply unsatisfied with the inability to purchase whatever they want whenever they want, they will hopefully realize how heavily they rely on the market. Some may argue that the establishment of a "Buy Nothing Day" is pointless and will not create enough awareness to make an impact. However, the establishment of these days will create repercussions that go far  beyond the 24- hour detox period. The overall goal of "Buy Nothing Days" are to produce a more conscious buyer who is aware of the unnecessary spending accumulated on a daily basis. These days are designed to educate consumers so they may be more conscious when making decisions that effect their pocketbooks. Overall, customers will become enlightened when dealing with their finances. Hopefully this realization will help them become self-sufficient and less reliant on unnecessary spending.Preventing "Buy Nothing Days" would negatively impact buyers and the global market. From a moral standpoint, "Buy Nothing Days" encourage consumers to take a step back and appreciate what they have, rather than shop for what they don't have. The modern world makes it very easy for people to get lost in a sea of shiny things. Therefore it is very important buyers are instilled with values and morals that allow them to be grateful and appreciative of what they have. This annual day would serve as a reminder to buyers, to be grateful for what they have, and hopefully instill them with a sense of value. Other subtle world improvements would occur: energy, fossil fuels, and electricity would be vastly saved and replenished during this 24- hour detox. Over all, great benefit comes in all aspects of this holiday. It is important for consumers to realize how involved they are with purchasing on a regular basis. Establishment of annual "Buy Nothing Days" would help the average consumer to reevaluate their spending, appreciate the means of what they have, and contribute to other subtle world improvements.
