In each human body there contains multiple elements. The element Iodine can be found in your body by the food you consume or even through your thyroid hormones. Iodine was originally discovered in 1811 by Bernard Courtois. Bernard Courtois was known as a French Chemist. This chemist came to the conclusion that Iodine is non-metallic and can be an essential micronutrient in the ionic form of Iodide. In Greek terms ?Iode? means violet while being in a gaseous state. Iodine is known to be a major health problem in the world called Iodine deficiency (Lyons). Throughout the element Iodine you will find out what substances you intake give you more iodine, mechanisms, states and symptoms, and side effects.
Iodine is found in food groups, dietary substances, and oceans. The foods you get your iodine from would include vegetables, dairy products, eggs, meat, and seafood (Lyons). You can also get iodine from dietary substances such as iodized salt, seaweed, cow?s milk, navy beans, and potatoes. The oceans content of iodine is inconsistent depending on the location. The high concentration of Iodine is usually found in marine species, while low concentration of iodine is found in land-based foods (Lyons). No matter, how you receive your Iodine you will always need some to keep your body healthy and running.
In the human body, Iodine takes place on the skin, in the thyroids, and even during pregnancy and lactation. Through intact skin, Iodine can be absorbed. The absorption occurs through wounds, abrasions, and decubitus ulcers or mucosal surfaces known as broken skin (Lyons). As you know Iodine can also absorb through the thyroid gland and during pregnancy or lactation. In the thyroid gland iodine is actually absorbed from the blood while the hormones are stored or released in a circular motion. During pregnancy or lactation the Iodine crosses the placenta and excretes in breast milk. Iodine is also known to keep breasts healthy. The circulation of Iodine in your body keeps you healthy and active with no problem.
After consuming too much Iodine there is a major health problem known as Iodine Deficiency (Iodine Monograph). More than two billion people in the world are affected with this problem. Most people are diagnosed with Iodine Deficiency because it?s known for damaging the brain. Many children from the ages of six to twelve are more than likely to have it than an adult would. There is a certain amount of Iodine each person should take daily. For an adult the correct dosage would be about 150 mcg and for lactating or pregnant women they should take about 290mcg (Iodine Monograph). Inside your body you want about fifteen to twenty milligrams of Iodine in your thyroid tissue or hormones as well. All the iodine is contributed throughout your body in the mammary tissue, the eye, the gastric mucosa, cervix, and the salivary glands (Iodine Monograph). Too much damage to ones brain can cause mental retardation, which is not something anyone wants to happen but sometimes there?s no way to cure it after its been processed.
When consuming Iodine there are also many side effects that can take place to one?s body. When on a diet it is always recommended to follow the normal amounts prescribed and not overdosing yourself. Another way to be safe when taking iodine is take the normal amount specified by a qualified clinician. If you are a sensitive person you could easily have an allergic reaction taking too much or barely taking any at all. Hypersensitivity would include effects such as bleeding or bruising, running a fever, having joint pain, and many allergic reactions (Iodine Monograph). The main side effects from taking Iodine would cause acne, coryza, having weaknesses, and maybe even having nasty breath. The poisoning stage of Iodine can be called Acute Iodine Toxicity when taking multiple types of gram doses. During the poisoning stage there can be burning of the mouth, throat, or stomach; having a fever, nauseated, vomiting, diarrhea, light pulses, or go into a coma (Iodine Monograph).
Overall, taking iodine has its advantages and disadvantages. When iodine has taken place in the body you want to make sure you have the correct amount without overdosing yourself that can cause Iodine Deficiency which could lead to having brain damage which makes you have a higher chance of being mentally retarded. If you have at least twenty milligrams of iodine daily your body with
