Lin et al Article Critique: Part 1
This is a paper that demonstrates how to critique empirical research articles. This paper is also written to thoroughly critique the research study conducted by Lin et al. (2004). A critique of a research article is the objective examination of a scientific research study with the emphasis on whether or not the authors supported their points with reasonable and relevant arguments based on facts. There are a variety of steps to evaluate within the research article critique. First of all, one of the most important steps of evaluating research articles is to review the title. Secondly, the abstracts of research articles should be examined. After critiquing the abstracts of articles, the readers analyze the literature review and the hypothesis of the research studies that is within the articles. In the next section of this paper, a summary of the research study conducted by Lin et al. (2004) will be looked at.
Summary of Article
The research conducted by Lin et al. (2004) was based on the benefits of forgiveness therapy. The authors examined the forgiveness therapy technique for inpatient substance abusing clients and whether it could help to reduce anger, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, forgiveness and vulnerability to drug use. The authors discovered that the level of anger and violence was higher in alcohol and other substance abusers in comparison to the general population, as recorded in previous studies. The authors also explained that certain triggers such as anger and frustration can cause relapse in both personal areas.
The article refers to a group of researchers who have worked towards developing a new therapeutic approach to forgiveness therapy. Forgiveness therapy makes the clients aware of forgiveness. A person is given the choice to decide to forgive and to learn the emotional skills to forgive. As readers of this particular research study, readers can assume that the anger that is found in drug addicts is directly caused by traumatic personal events. For example, a case study was placed inside the study to show the significance of the treatment.
The title of this particular article is accurately portraying the contents of the article. The title states the purpose, however it exceeds the American Psychological Association required word length which is fifteen words. The word length is less than twenty words. The variables, negative moods, and the faith therapy are described within the title to give clues of what the study consist of. The title defines the type of participants, substance abuse inpatients, which are used in the study. The authors did not mention any particular use of a previous theory or previous researcher. Even through the article has a lengthy title, the title does not reveal any of the results in the title name and the authors have avoided the use of yes or no questions within the title. The title is important and it helps the reader to determine what the article is about.
Critique of Abstract
The abstract of this article is within the criteria of the American Psychological Association suggested format. According to the American Psychological Association, the abstract is descriptive summary of the research study that is shown below the title of the research. The requirement of an abstract in a research study is to remain between 100-250 words. The purpose is clearly stated within the abstract. The abstract mentions the main subjects of the research methodology, which is to complete specific amounts of therapy sessions to measure, compare, and contrast the improvements with those who participated. A small portion of the results was included, but the researcher did not include any references of measurements.
Critique of Literature Review
In research, literature is a collection of published information and data relevant to a research question. The research question provides the context for the research study and reveals what the researcher is trying to answer. Stating the problem limits scope of the research study by focusing on certain elements of research. In this article?s literature review, Lin et al.
