She hated her grandmother and had hidden it from herself all these years under a cloak of pity. She had been getting ready for her great journey to the horizons in search of people; it was important to all the world that she should find them and they find her. But she had been whipped like a cur dog, and run off down a back road after things. It was all according to the way you see things. Some people could look at a mud puddle and see an ocean with ships. But Nanny belonged to that other kind that loved to deal in scraps. Here Nanny had taken the biggest thing God ever made, the horizon- for no matter how far a person can go the horizon is still way beyond you- and pinched it in to such a little bit of a thing that she could tie it about her granddaughter?s neck tight enough to choke her. She hated the old women who has twisted her so in the name of love. (pg. 89)
Before the passage, Janie?s husband, Jody, had jus died. While he was dying he didn?t want Janie to enter his room. She felt that she needed to tell him how she felt before he passed. She explained to him that she didn?t leave Logan (her ex-husband) to be ruled by him. She thought he was her dream man but realized he was just there at the right moment.
In this passage, Janie had just arrived home from Jody?s funeral. She is thinking about what?s next in her life. She comes to a conclusion that she hated her grandmother. Because of Nanny she has not had the chance to fulfill any of her dreams. Nanny has always controlled what has happened in Janie?s life. Maybe if she hadn?t got married at a young age she would be on her journey to the horizons; exploring life.
Thesis: In the passage Janie realizes that Nanny hindered her from obtaining her ?horizon? of having a good relationship and meeting new people.
The author shows that after Jody?s death Janie starts to feel lonely and starts to analyze her life ?she hated her grandmother and had hidden it from herself.? Nanny thought that she was helping Janie but in reality she was stopping her from accomplishing her dreams ?Nanny had taken the biggest thing God ever made, the horizon.? Janie had big dreams in life ?she had been getting ready for her great journey? and now she realizes that they haven?t been fulfilled because of Nanny. When Nanny made Janie marry Logan; Janie looked at it as something she didn?t agree with that could later be something good? ?look at a mud puddle and see an ocean with ships.? Because of how young she was and how old Nanny was becoming Janie didn?t want to disrespect her? ?a cloak of pity? but Janie knew that Nanny was pressing her dreams on Janie. ?Pinched it in to such a little bit of a thing that she could tie it about her granddaughter?s neck? which means Nanny was trying to give Janie something that she didn?t have when she was younger, but she?s not realizing that Janie doesn?t care about material things; she just wants to be loved. Nanny, Logan, and Jody stopped Janie from meeting new people? ?search of people; it was important to all the world that she should find them and they find her? which was a very important part of her dream and that?s why now she has to start her life over. ?She hated the old women who had twisted her so in the name of love? she wants to do what she feels is best for her now and to find her true love.
I chose this passage because it is meaningful and a high point in the book. Jody?s death brought Janie to thinking how she got in that situation. As she analyzed everything that she?d been through she realized how much she hated her grandmother. She made it out to be pity all these years but it was purely hate. Janie had dreams but Nanny wasn?t worried about that; Nanny wanted Janie to want the things she wanted. Because Janie didn?t have anywhere or anyone to turn to she listened to Nanny and all her dreams faded day by day.
