A world health issue that is happening today is obesity in children and adolescents. Obesity is an excess proportion of total body fat. A person is considered obese when his or her weight is 20% or more above normal weight. Obesity occurs when a person consumes more calories than he or she burns. For many people this boils down to eating too much and exercising too little. But there are other factors that also play a role in obesity like: age, gender, genetics and physical activity.
As you get older, your body\'s ability to metabolize food slows down and you do not require as many calories to maintain your weight. Women tend to be more overweight than men. Men burn more energy at rest than women, so men require more calories to maintain their body weight. Obesity tends to run in families. Most significantly, when children grow up in families with bad eating habits and sedentary lifestyles dominated by television watching and video games, they are 33.3 percent more likely to become overweight or obese as young adults. Physical activity tends to decrease appetite in obese individuals while increasing the body\'s ability to preferentially metabolize fat as an energy source.
To help and to encourage adults who are suffering from obesity, they need to learn the life-threatening effects that accompany the ?heavy? burden. People should become more physically active and attempt to make healthier choices because their life depends on these crucial decisions. We need to accept that these reasons exist and once we can do that, they will be less likely to affect us.
